Hųųwą (Elk) ~ Restoring Tradition and Healthy Living
Hųųwą is how one would say elk in Hoocąk. Elk were once common in Wisconsin and throughout North America. For centuries, elk were important to the Hoocąk as source of food, leather, tools, decoration, and many other uses.
In 1995 Wisconsin DNR began it’s elk reintroduction and management project. And, in March of 1995 the reintroduction expanded to central (Jackson County) Wisconsin, in which the Ho-Chunk Nation (Nation) played a significant role.
A collaborative agreement established between the WI DNR and Nation affording every other carcass to the Nation, to be utilized under terms of the agreement.
