Our Goal

The Higher Education Division's goal is to provide guidance and financial assistance to Ho-Chunk members who intend to pursue a post secondary education. Scholarships are granted as a privilege with the intent that graduates will return to the Ho-Chunk Nation to use their knowledge and expertise to protect and strengthen the economic self-sufficiency and sovereignty of the Ho-Chunk Nation.

Ho-Chunk Nation Scholarship Program

The Ho-Chunk Scholarship Program provides financial resources to help enrolled Ho-Chunk members complete a progressive post secondary degree. The recipients must attend a nonprofit Title IV regionally accredited institution. The Ho-Chunk Scholarship Program is intended for students working toward degree completion.

Financial Aid and Tax Filing Statement

In order to receive a Ho-Chunk Nation Scholarship, students are required to file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) with accurate information. Accurate information includes a declaration of all funds acquired from Ho-Chunk gaming revenue (e.g. per capita) and the full value of the student's Children's Trust Fund, if applicable. Failure to completely and accurately file one's taxes and/or FAFSA will make any student ineligible for a Ho-Chunk Nation Scholarship until such discrepancies are resolved.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will it take to receive my scholarship?

10-14 business days after your application and all supporting documents have been received, evaluated, and any conflicting information is resolved. We will mail your scholarship check directly to your academic institution.

When should I apply?

90 days before school starts. Delays happen when students apply close to the start of the term because that is a high volume time for our office. Applying right before school starts may require you to make payment arrangements with the school until your file is complete and your scholarship is sent to the school. Our staff will complete files in the order received. Remember, you have the responsibility to pay for your education until your application has been received, evaluated, and awarded.

Do I need to file my FAFSA?

Yes! The FAFSA is an essential aspect of your Ho-Chunk Scholarship application process. https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa

Why do I need to file the FAFSA?

Because our financial resources are limited and filing your FAFSA helps saves the Ho-Chunk Nation money. You, as an American citizen and resident of your state, may be eligible for certain scholarships and financial support. Filing your FAFSA helps ensure you get the financial support you are entitled to and helps the Higher Education Division be good stewards of the resources entrusted to us by the Ho-Chunk Nation Legislature.

I have questions about applying, whom should I contact?

The best way to get in touch with us is by email at higher.education@ho-chunk.com. We check it regularly and we will use that to respond to you. If you have a more complex question, we will set up a time to meet with you virtually or in-person. Drop in phone calls and visits to the office are not ideal, especially during high volume times such as late August through September and January. Again, please send us an email and we are happy to make an appointment to connect with you.

Should I submit my forms all at once?

No. The first document you should complete and submit is your Ho-Chunk Scholarship Application (HSA). You can turn in the other required documents (e.g., itemized billing statement, class schedule, etc.) as they become available.

Why do I need to submit SO many forms?

The documents we ask you to submit are essential so that we are good stewards of the funds entrusted to us by the Ho-Chunk Nation Legislature. We need you to file the FAFSA so that you are eligible for other funding sources that give our scholarship program the ability to serve more Ho-Chunk college students. Your financial award summary, class schedule, official transcripts, and other documents help us ensure that you get the correct scholarship amount and to determine that you are making satisfactory academic progress.

What is the difference between probation and suspension?

Probation means that you did not meet the academic requirements set forth in our policy, but you remain eligible to receive a scholarship. To return to good standing, please review your probation letter we sent you.

Suspension means that you are ineligible to receive a scholarship until you meet the terms laid out in your suspension letter. You are still eligible for academic advising through our office, however. You can learn more about the probation and suspension in our higher education funding policy.

How do I receive a Graduation Achievement Award?

You must complete an application and submit all the required supporting documents within one year of the date on your diploma. You can learn more about the Graduation Achievement Award and the requirements in our higher education funding policy.
